Looking Out For Our Furry Friends!
The Mahamaya Foundation for Dogs works with shelters and healthcare organizations globally that provide care to abandoned and homeless dogs. Today, we work with the Samarpan Foundation in Delhi to provide meals for street dogs, and with several shelters in Varanasi to provide rabies vaccines.
Dogs and Varanasi
Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, is revered as a sacred hub for millions of pilgrims and seekers. With a rich heritage steeped in spiritual tradition, Varanasi stands as a place of refuge and liberation, where deities like Lord Shiva and his fierce manifestation, Kala Bhairav, hold special significance. Known as the city’s eternal protector, Kala Bhairav is entrusted with the guardianship of Varanasi, maintaining spiritual and physical order for its residents and visitors alike. His presence embodies a deep-rooted belief in the sanctity of life, which extends to all beings within the city’s boundaries.
Kala Bhairav is uniquely associated with dogs, seen as his loyal companions and protectors of Varanasi’s sacred spaces. In Hindu tradition, dogs serve as his vahana (vehicle), symbolizing their role as vigilant overseers and spiritual messengers. In Varanasi, dogs are more than just animals; they are respected as embodiments of Kala Bhairav’s protective spirit. This symbolic connection has fostered a tradition of care and reverence for dogs, and it reinforces the city's commitment to the welfare of these animals as guardians under Kala Bhairav’s watchful gaze.
Today, however, Varanasi faces a pressing challenge with the overpopulation of stray dogs, leading to concerns about disease transmission and the welfare of these animals. Many dogs live on the streets without proper shelter, care, or vaccinations, leaving them vulnerable to infections like rabies and distemper, which can also impact the community. Non-profits like the Mahamaya Foundation are stepping up to provide essential vaccines, medical treatment, and shelters to protect these sacred animals and promote a healthier, safer environment. By supporting the health and well-being of Varanasi’s dogs, these organizations honor Kala Bhairav’s legacy and contribute to a compassionate and harmonious city for all.
See What Our Founder Has to Say:
Maybe it's the millennial in me, growing up with Pokémon adventures and a deep-rooted love for creatures of all kinds, but I've always believed that humans and animals are meant to journey through life together. Dogs, with their boundless loyalty and ability to ground us in the present, are the partners who make us better versions of ourselves. They mirror the spirit of Kala Bhairav, Varanasi’s steadfast protector, embodying courage, resilience, and a unique wisdom in their silent companionship. Through the Mahamaya Foundation, we're dedicated to restoring the sacred place of dogs in Varanasi, honoring them as loyal guardians and beloved companions of this ancient city. Our mission is to see them not only protected but respected, returning to their role as trusted allies within Varanasi’s vibrant community.
